In Russia, mainly spring varieties are cultivated.

 Barley cereals are crushed barley kernels, freed from flower films. The advantage of barley cereals is that, unlike the pearl barley, it is not polished, so there is more fiber in it.

Pearl barley is whole barley grain, peeled and ground or unpolished. Its name was obtained because the color and shape resembles a river pearl. Used to make pearl barley.

Used in brewing. It is the most common cereal, from which malt is produced.


In folk medicine, a decoction of barley cereals is used for inflammatory diseases of the stomach and intestines, as a restorative aid after operations on the organs of the abdominal cavity.

A peculiarity of barley flour is a large amount of β-glucan polysaccharide, which has a cholesterol-lowering effect, a good ratio between protein and starch, a rich content of provitamin A, B vitamins and trace elements: calcium, phosphorus, iodine, especially a lot of silicic acid.
